Pesta Bayangan  — Festival of Shadows, Festival of Imagination

Project
Pesta Bayangan
Client
Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble
Year
2025
Photo
Marcia Ong

The visual identity for Pesta Bayangan reimagines Javanese shadow puppetry through the lens of ecological destruction and humanity's relationship with the natural world. Each print and social media collateral features an original photograph of a wayang kulit puppet, with its still figure contrasted by an animated shadow to evoke the illusion of life in performance. Contemporary landscape images are paired with each of the festival's three performances, connecting mythological narratives to present-day environmental realities. A palette of deep reds and earthy browns, inspired by soil, clay, and scorched earth, reinforces the themes of violence, extraction, and transformation that run throughout the festival.
