SKALA is a music company helmed by Rosmainy Buang, a practitioner of gamelan music (Javanese, Sundanese and Balinese gamelan). The name SKALA has multiple meanings, amongst them, it can refer to a musical scale (skala musik), a ladder (σκάλα), or the tangible, sensorial, world of aesthetics (sekala).
We conceptualised SKALA as a metaphorical ladder, a journey and process of attempting to achieve rasa in music. To illustrate this, we developed a logo which modifies the central letter A into an abstraction of an upward pointing ladder. It also visually references the keys of metallophones or bamboo instruments found throughout different gamelan ensembles.
